I made this scarf for a friend of mine for Christmas. Yes, I’m posting this before I give it away. Hopefully, the recipient won’t be viewing this page before they receive it.
It’s crocheted in 4 ply worsted weight yarn. Here’s the basic pattern all done in HDC (Half double crochet).
Crochet a foundation chain as long as you want the width to be. Since this scarf was for a man, I chained 26. For a woman, I think I’d chain around 18 or so.
Hook size: I
Rows 1-6 Color 1
*Rows 7-18 Color 2
Row 19-20 Color 1
Rows 21-22 Color 2
Rows 23-24 Color 1
Rows 25-26 Color 2
Rows 27-28 Color 1*
Repeat rows 7-28 until you get the length you want, then crochet 6 rows of Color 1.
What size hook did you use? Thank you.
Hi Vicki!
Goodness! I can’t believe I left out the hook size. It’s size I (9, 5.50mm). I have a tendency to crochet very tightly so depending on how you crochet you may want to try a size smaller or larger.
Thank you for your comment!
Thank you so much. I crochet very tightly and will start with the same size you did.
This would be a great scarf for the special Olympics projects….they always specify 2 colors and I like to vary them….there is still time 2 crochet for them….just google special olympics, you should find the info. 🙂
Hi Lorraine!
What a great idea! I did google this and the website is: Scarves For Special Olympics People knit or crochet scarves with two colors and donate them to the Special Olympics as a welcome gift for the athletes, coaches, families, volunteers and supporters. Each year they designate two official colors for the scarves.
I’m also making scarves for the Special Olympics project and was really happy that you posted this pattern! Thanks!
I’m glad people are enjoying this pattern. It’s great it can be used for the Special Olympics, too!
If you or anyone else finds any issues with the pattern, let me know and I’ll tweak it.
Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to start.
Quick question. I cannot crochet to save my live, but can knit perfectly fine. could you give me the lengths of each of the stripes so I can knit a scarf like this in navy colors for my husband?? It would be greatly appreciated
Tiffany,
I’m going to have to guesstimate the widths since I no longer have the scarf, but I think the narrow stripes are roughly 1 inch wide and the stripes on each end are about 3 inches wide. So you’d probably knit something like:
Color 1 – 3 inches
Color 2 – 5 inches
Color 1 – 1 inch
Color 2 – 1 inch
Color 1 – 1 inch
Color 2 – 1 inch
Color 1 – 1 inch
Color 2 – as long as you want
Color 1 – 1 inch
Color 2 – 1 inch
Color 1 – 1 inch
Color 2 – 1 inch
Color 1 – 1 inch
Color 2 – 5 inches
Color 1 – 3 inches
Let me know how this turns out!
Ok, I will. 🙂
Love this!
